Many of the churches in Charleston don't have bells in their bell towers. On a Charleston carriage tour today, we learned that this is because most of them donated their bells for forging canons in the 1860's for the Civil War.
Charleston also has strict codes that if a building has been a certain way for over 75 years, that it must remain unless wiped out by a natural disaster... since many of the churches have been bell-less for more than 75 years, bell-less they must remain. An odd sight for sure.
