Twice a weekday, I drive by this massive tower on CR-M on the far-west side of Madison, Wisconsin. While I always knew it was 'some TV tower', I didn't know much more. Turns out, it is known as the Madison Candelabra tower, or the Madison Community tower.
After photographing it today, I did some research and found out that it isn't just a TV tower, but hosts almost all TV channels in Madison, including WISC (ch. 3), WMSN (ch. 47), WKOW (ch. 27) and WHA (ch. 21). Only WMTV (ch. 15) and WBUW (ch 57) are hosted on the other big tower just off the south-west side of the Beltline.
The thing is massive too (check the # of antennas at each height)--at 1,423 feet, it's taller than the Empire State building (1,250 ft to the roof) and almost as tall as the Sears Tower (Willis actually, 1,451 ft). So something to ponder the next time you see it off in the distance while commuting in Madison.
